Republic of Srpska and Banja Luka city
The Republic of Srpska one of two entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina is situated in the central part of Balkan Peninsula (South-East Europe) within the borders of ex-Yugoslavia( see at the map). It covers an area of 25.053 sq. km. The territory is grouped in two main regions, North-Western part of Srpska (consisting of Banja Luka Krajina region and Posavina region), and Eastern part of Srpska (consisting of Semberija and Majevica region, Drina region, Sarajevo and Romanija region and Herzegovina region). Some 55% of its territory is covered by forest mountains, and the highest peak is Maglic (Herzegovina region) at the altitude of 2.350 m above sea level. The climate in general is the continental one with long snowy winters and dry hot summers, with the exception to the Herzegovina region which enjoys the benefits of the Mediterranean climate. The capital of the Republic is the city Banja Luka the main administrative center and the seat of the Government. The main business center is also Banja Luka (pop.218.436) in the North- Western part of the country, with well developed agriculture, industry and services sector. The main airport is located there, and it is connected with the other parts of the country by rail and roads. Bijeljina (pop. 105.057) is situated in the North-East part of the country, only 8 km from the border with the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro). It is a well-developed agricultural and trading center. Trebinje (pop.30.154) is the main center for Herzegovina region, with developed Mediterranean agriculture and industry. The vicinity of Port of Bar in Montenegro makes it a good location for future development. The other important centers in the Republic are Prijedor, Doboj, Zvornik, Visegrad, Srbinje, Derventa and Brcko. However, the territory of the Republic has a very good potential for development, especially given its well-educated population and the structure of the economy in which all the sectors are represented. The natural beauty of the country can be compared to the one of Switzerland or Austria, and the natural resources provide a good basis for future development. The population of the Republic of Srpska is estimated to be in the region of 1.391.000. The population density is 55,5 persons per square kilometer. The official language is Serb, but the population is familiar with the German language due to the great number of people working in Germany, and with English which is the main foreign language taught in schools. Some 50.000 residents of the Republic work abroad, mainly in EU countries (Germany, France,Austria, Sweden).
The basic strategy of the government with regards to health is to revamp the health system as rapidly as possible, to improve on the quality of basic hospital services, to put into operation a clinical hospital centre in Banja Luka, restore primary health care facilities, to reform the health insurance scheme, to revitalize the medical education system and to develop the pharmaceutical sector. Much of the assistance is directed through an Essential Hospital Services project with a project implementation unit. There is also a Japanese program for medical equipment. However other programs for procuring medical equipment and supplies would be welcome The urgent requirements for education are with the need to rehabilitate exiting premises and to reconstruct buildings bearing in mind the shift location of the population of school age. A program of school reconstruction needs has been drawn up. With the transition in society and the economy curriculum development is also urgently required. Support is needed for the Banja Luka University especially for it to be able to participate in exchange programs and for it to take part in European integration activities.
Idea about establishing an AMDA chapter in our country was from the fact that four medical doctors from Banja Luka was AMDA's guests in Japan, on their education in different specialties in 1996. They spent about two month on the different clinics all over Japan. On their arrival back home they initialize idea about AMDA chapter in Banja Luka, which is realize nowadays. The main goals of our work is improving the health system and quality of medical service in our country as well as better education of medical staff in different specialties and introduction of modern medical procedures and techniques that are not available in our country after the war in our county. All kind of help as financial, medical equipment, literature (medical journal, books, CD) are welcome as well as fellowships in different specialties.
